A dividend is a payment from a company out of its profits/earnings to shareholders.  These can be paid in cash, additional shares, or other property. Many investors are confused about dividends and think that this is “free money”. In reality, dividend-producing stocks do not, as a rule, have higher overall returns than other stocks.
